Aims / Objectives Board of Trustees Modalities Gains / Losses

In The Beginning:

1999 became a turning point in the life of our great country. After several years of military dictatorship and failed attempts at democratization, coupled with the botched and annulled general election of 1993, Nigeria’s third attempt at democratization was seen as a necessity rather than the norms.

The legislative arm of government is the main pillar in every democratic setting, be it under a parliamentary system or Presidential system of Government.

Its roles and functions cannot be overemphised since it is seen to be the mouth piece of the governed that they represents.

Its law making responsibility which is its primary functions makes it the most important arm of government.

The incessant use of the legislative arm of Government by the Executive to perpetuate lawlessness, pervade the course of justice and the rule of law as exhibited in such states like Bayelsa, Oyo and even at the National Assembly has become a daily reoccurrence in our polity.

The members of the legislative arm more than any other arm of government has lost so much creditability in the eyes of the citizenry, who sees them as a bunch of corrupt officials. To Nigerians the legislative arm is all about Ghana Must Go. “Justice for the highest bidder”

It is therefore pertinent to have a cursory look at how far the legislative arm has fared in our journey to full democracy and to evaluate how they have discharged their oversight functions.
